JUST THE FACTS

Dan Bengel
Hello there, maybe you found this site because you are really unlucky, or maybe I told you about it. Whatever the case may be, you now owe me a beer! This is not some fancy blog, with me posting on it all day, but one that has "just the facts". You know, the important things in life. The tap list, events coming up, and specials. Yeah, I'm even going to comment on some of the stuff I will be doing here. So get me that beer and relax, the show is getting ready to start.

SESSION FEST REPORT- DAY ONE

After getting mentioned in the Daily News and the New York Times, my week was looking great. Then John calls and says "Dan, we only sold 12 tickets". My jaw dropped to the floor, which by the way, is quite a fall. The excuses were many, everybody in the whole state left to go to the shore, which was why all the beer stores and grocery stores were so empty all weekend. It was a Thursday night and everybody was running around, and my personal favorite, we won't drink anything under 6%. I knew if we canceled it, the ripple effects would take place down the road. So after a couple of beers, I talked to Lew and said " If we are going down, we are going down kicking and screaming". With a total crowd of around 20, we went on with the show. It was how I wanted to do it, Lew sitting and talking with the folks, Gordon from Nodding Head talking about his Berliner Weisse, and getting to try it for the first time on draft. Some food brought out, some we got at a buffet. In other words, a great fun night with everybody involved. Nobody went home unhappy except three people, me, Lew and John. There is no way we can continue this series of looking at the session beers of the season without more people. I still can't understand why you wouldn't want to have a great meal and some fine beer to go with it. All this was supposed to be was a get together of good folks, food, and beer. Nothing else. I guess the beer snobs win round one.

My conclusion at the end of this weekend is that all of the REAL beer fans who were in the Delaware Valley this weekend made it to at least one of the three days at Ortino's. Anyone who didn't is a snob and should be ashamed.

Just out of curosity, do you have any idea of who made the longest trip to get there?

I know Philly for sure, but Guy from upstate may be the winner.

Yeah, in a way it was better without a massive turnout--it was more intimate. It was all the hard-core local beer people, friends, etc. The same people I see at every event. We're like a lil tight knit group. But I understand a big turnout does not equal massive amounts of $$$.

I haven't found out what the sales were that day. I think they have to be decent because you could spend 8 hours and drink 6 to 10 beers and not fall on your face.

You know...we stopped at some other of our fave places over the weekend, and were amazed at how empty they were. We're just not a "down the shore" family -- more a 'head for the hills' bunch -- but it was stunning. We went to Washington Crossing Historical Park yesterday: had the place to ourselves. Yow. Went home and grilled and drank pilsner.

A historical park? Do I have to call child services on you? And you grilled pilsner too. You had way too much session my friend. Thanks a bunch!
